Along with the SSD, adding RAM is one of the two most common upgrades we do at Solutech to revive slow computers. But unlike an SSD, RAM is not always worth it. In this guide we explain when it is, when it is not, and how to avoid spending money on something that will not solve your real problem.
What RAM actually does
RAM (random access memory) is your computer’s “desk”. It is where Windows and your programs keep the data they are working on right now. When you open Chrome, Word and Outlook at the same time, all of those programs take up space in your RAM.
More RAM does not make your computer faster in itself. What it does is let you keep more things open at once without everything slowing down. When RAM runs out, Windows starts using your hard drive as a substitute (they call it “virtual memory”), and that is when the computer feels painfully slow.
How much RAM you need, by use
This is the guide we give clients every week:

Today’s reality: 4 GB is no longer enough for Windows 10/11, not even for basic use. Modern Chrome with 5 tabs eats 2–3 GB on its own. If your computer has 4 GB you are going to have trouble regardless of what you do.
How to check how much RAM you have
On Windows:
- Right-click the Start button → System
- Look for the “Device specifications” section
- You will see “Installed RAM”
For more detail, open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), go to the Performance → Memory tab. There you can see how much you have, how much you are using right now, and how many free RAM slots your machine has.
When it IS worth upgrading
These are the situations where adding RAM makes a noticeable difference:
- You have 4 GB and do normal office work or browsing. Going to 8 GB feels like a new machine.
- You have 8 GB but open lots of tabs and programs at once and the machine crawls by midday. 16 GB removes that bottleneck.
- You work with heavy programs (Photoshop, AutoCAD, video editing) and see “memory usage” in Task Manager permanently above 85%.
- Your machine has an SSD and is still slow. If the drive is fast and it still drags, it is almost always the RAM.
When it is NOT worth it
This is where a lot of people spend money by mistake:
- A machine over 10 years old with a very weak processor. Extra RAM does not make up for a 2010 i3. Better to invest in something new.
- You already have 16 GB and do normal work. More RAM will not give you more speed. If it is slow, the problem is another component or the software.
- The machine is already at its supported maximum. Some basic laptops only accept 8 GB, full stop. This has to be checked before buying anything.
- Your real problem is something else: a mechanical drive (HDD), viruses, or a Windows install that needs reformatting. RAM does not fix those.
How to know whether your machine takes more RAM
Before buying anything, check two critical things:
- The maximum capacity your machine supports. Some laptops accept a maximum of 8 GB, others 16, others 32. This depends on the motherboard, not on Windows.
- The RAM type and speed. DDR3, DDR4, DDR5 — they are not compatible with each other. And within the same type there are different speeds (2400 MHz, 3200 MHz, and so on).
The safest way: send us the model of your machine on WhatsApp (brand + exact model, for example “Dell Inspiron 15-5570”) and we will confirm within minutes what RAM it takes, up to how much, and whether it is worth it in your case.
Real measured cases
Case 1: A 4 GB laptop that seemed dead
A client with a 2019 HP Pavilion with 4 GB. He wanted to throw it out. Diagnosis: RAM was filling to 95% with only Chrome and Outlook open. Fix: go up to 8 GB.

The client told us: “I thought I needed to buy a new laptop.”
Case 2: A company that asked to put everyone on 32 GB
An office with 12 computers for office staff, all with 8 GB. The manager thought they needed 32 GB because “everyone complains it is slow”. The real diagnosis: their machines had HDDs, not insufficient RAM. Adding RAM would have solved nothing, because the bottleneck was the drive.
Resolution: we moved all 12 machines to SSDs. We left the 8 GB of RAM alone. Performance improved dramatically. Total cost: a fraction of what it would have cost to put 32 GB of useless memory into machines with HDDs.
This happens a lot. That is why we always diagnose before recommending.
Case 3: A designer with 16 GB who genuinely needed more
A client who works with Photoshop and Illustrator at the same time. 16 GB was falling short when opening large files. We took her to 32 GB and her workflow changed: large files that used to force her to close other programs are now handled alongside everything else.
Here the upgrade was worth every penny. It is the typical case where the user already knows their workflow and knows RAM is the real bottleneck.
The “more RAM = faster” myth
RAM only helps you up to the point where you stop needing more. If you normally use 6 GB and have 16 GB installed, having 32 GB is not going to make your computer faster. It is only insurance against the day you need more. And for typical office use, that day never comes.
This matters because a lot of people think “I will put 32 GB in now so it lasts more years”. In practice, 16 GB will hold up for a long time for office work. Going from 16 to 32 GB rarely pays for itself for non-professional users.
When to combine an SSD with more RAM
The combination we see most in the workshop: a machine with an HDD and 4 GB. The client’s question: “which do I do first?”
The practical answer: SSD first, RAM second. The SSD gives the most noticeable change (Windows boots quickly, programs open instantly). Then, if it still feels like it stalls with many programs open, add RAM.
If your budget allows both upgrades at once, the result is a complete transformation: 5–6 year old machines end up better than some cheap new ones.
Summary
- 4 GB: not enough for modern Windows. Going to 8 GB is the priority.
- 8 GB: enough for basic office work. Go to 16 GB if you work with many programs at once.
- 16 GB: ideal for most people. Do not go to 32 GB unless you know exactly why.
- Check before buying: maximum capacity, RAM type, available slots.
- It is not always the answer: if your problem is a slow drive, viruses or a degraded Windows install, RAM will not fix it.
