Advanced options
Lower quality = smaller file. 90 preserves visual quality for a conversion.
Reduces dimensions proportionally; never enlarges. For web use, 1920 px is a good cap.
EXIF metadata (GPS location, date, camera model) does not survive a format change: only JPG carries it, and reaching JPG means redrawing the image. We checked this in Chrome, Firefox and Safari. If you need to keep it, do not convert the file.
How it works
Real conversion, correct format guaranteed
We empirically verify that every output format is actually produced in Chrome, Firefox and Safari. When a browser can’t produce a format honestly, we don’t offer it: a short list beats a file with the wrong extension.
Transparency is kept when the format allows it
PNG and WebP keep the full alpha channel, partial transparency included. When converting to JPG, which technically has no alpha, you pick the background color: left alone, the browser would fill it black.
ICO ready to use as a favicon
We generate an ICO holding the three standard sizes (16, 32 and 48 px) in one file. We checked it with a decoder outside the browser, to be sure it is a real ICO and not a PNG wearing another name.
Frequently asked questions
Which formats can I convert to? ▾
JPG, PNG, WebP and ICO. We tested every combination in Chrome, Firefox and Safari and kept the ones all three produce correctly. BMP, GIF, AVIF and TIFF are not offered: browsers can’t write them, and the bad part is that they don’t say so — ask for a BMP and you get a PNG named like a BMP. Firefox is the only one that writes BMP and ICO natively, which is exactly why testing in a single browser is not enough.
Is transparency preserved? ▾
Yes, fully in PNG and WebP, partial transparency included: a soft edge or a gradient shadow comes back with its values intact. Converting to JPG brings up a background color picker, because JPG has no alpha channel and that area has to be painted something.
Can I convert SVG to other formats? ▾
Yes. When you add an SVG we ask for the output dimensions, 512 × 512 px by default. It is needed because an SVG is vector art with no natural size: if you don’t say, each browser invents a different one — Chrome and Safari use 150 px and Firefox 300 px for the same file.
What happens with animated GIFs? ▾
Through the canvas, browsers only give access to the first frame of a GIF, with no exception across engines. If you add an animated GIF we tell you before converting and you decide: convert that first frame, or cancel that file.
Can I use the generated ICO as a favicon? ▾
Yes. We generate the multi-size ICO with 16, 32 and 48 px, which is the standard format. Copy it as favicon.ico at the root of your site and browsers will pick it up for the tab on their own. If your image is not square we center it and pad with transparency, so it does not come out stretched.
What if I just want the file to be smaller, without changing format? ▾
That is compression, and we have a separate tool for it. If you pick converting a JPG to JPG we tell you and take you to Compress images. And if what you want is to change the pixel dimensions, that is what Resize images does.
