Compress images

All local

Reduce your photos’ size up to 80% without visible quality loss. Everything happens in your browser — your images never leave your computer.

Drag your images here

JPG · PNG · WebP · BMP

No file count limit. Recommended up to 50 MB per file.

BMP is converted to PNG. PNG is converted to WebP (with an option to preserve it in advanced).

Advanced options

Lower quality = smaller file. 80 is indistinguishable in most cases.

Includes GPS location, date and camera model. Disabled by default for privacy.

PNG cannot be compressed without changing format. Turn this on if you specifically need a PNG file, for example to paste into Word or older software. The result will be practically identical to the original.

Reduces dimensions proportionally; never enlarges. For web use, 1920 px is a good cap.

How it works

Everything runs locally

Your browser compresses images using your own device’s power. No file is uploaded to our servers or sent over the internet — you can verify this with dev tools (F12 → Network).

What quality do I get?

We use quality 80 out of 100 by default. For photos and web use it is indistinguishable from the original. If you need more compression, for email or WhatsApp, lower the slider in advanced options.

Is anything important lost?

By default we strip EXIF metadata, including GPS location and camera details, for privacy. If you need to keep it, for photo cataloging, turn it on in advanced options.

Frequently asked questions

Which formats are supported? ▾

JPG and WebP are compressed keeping their format. PNG is converted to WebP, because PNG is lossless and compressing it without changing format does not reduce the size at all: the browser ignores the quality setting and hands back a practically identical file. As WebP the same image can weigh 5% of what it did, with transparency intact. If you need the PNG for compatibility, there is a switch in advanced options. BMP is also converted to PNG, because browsers cannot write BMP. AVIF and GIF are not accepted: the first already uses better compression than anything we could produce, and the second would lose its animation. If what you want is to change format on purpose, rather than just shrink the file, that is what Convert images does.

What is the maximum file size? ▾

There is no hard limit. We recommend up to 50 MB per file to avoid hanging older devices. There is a second limit that depends on dimensions rather than weight: an image with a huge number of pixels can exceed what the browser handles even when the file is small. If that happens we tell you on that image, and the rest keep going. To change dimensions on purpose, rather than just the weight, there is Resize images.

Does transparency work (PNG)? ▾

Yes. WebP supports transparency just like PNG, including partial transparency: a soft edge or a gradient shadow comes back with its values intact. We checked this with fully transparent and gradient-alpha images before enabling the conversion.

Are my images uploaded anywhere? ▾

No. All processing happens in your own browser using JavaScript. You can disconnect from the internet after loading the page and the tool keeps working.

Can I compress many images at once? ▾

Yes. Drag as many as you want. They process 3 at a time in parallel, to avoid overloading your device, and become available for individual or ZIP download.
