If your computer is more than 4 years old and feels slow, you probably do not need to buy a new one. In 80% of the cases we see at Solutech, all it needs is an SSD. It is the most cost-effective upgrade you can make to a machine. Here is why, with real timings measured on Panamanian clients’ computers.
What an SSD is and why it matters so much
An SSD (Solid State Drive) is a drive that stores information in memory chips, with no moving parts. A traditional HDD (Hard Disk Drive) uses spinning platters and a head that physically moves to read data, just like an old record player.
The speed difference is brutal. An HDD reads about 100 MB per second. A basic SSD reads 500 MB per second (5 times faster). A modern NVMe SSD can read 3,000–7,000 MB per second (50–70 times faster).
But raw speed is only part of the story. The real difference is in access time: an HDD needs 10–20 milliseconds to find a file. An SSD does it in 0.1 milliseconds. 100 times faster. That is why using one feels “instant”.

Here we recommended NVMe rather than SATA because the laptop already had a free M.2 slot. The difference with NVMe is larger still under heavy loads.
What about your data? Does it get lost?
No. We run a process called cloning. We copy the old drive byte by byte onto the new SSD. When it finishes, your Windows, your programs, your files, your photos and your settings are exactly as they were — only faster.
The whole process takes between 2 and 4 hours, depending on how much is on the drive. You do nothing; you just hand us the machine.
Other, less obvious benefits
Beyond speed, an SSD also:
- Makes less noise. None at all. It has no moving parts.
- Uses less battery in laptops. Between 30 minutes and 1 hour more runtime per charge.
- Survives knocks better. An HDD is damaged if the laptop falls while it is running. An SSD is not.
- Generates less heat, which helps the rest of the machine.
- Lasts longer. Modern SSDs have a longer service life than HDDs under normal office use.
When it is NOT worth switching to an SSD
It would be dishonest to say it is always worth it. It is not worth it if:
- The machine is over 10 years old and has only 2–4 GB of RAM. The RAM will hold you back too. Better to invest in something new.
- The machine has an undiagnosed hardware problem. If the laptop restarts on its own from overheating or the screen is broken, an SSD will not fix that.
- You are going to buy a new laptop in the next 6 months. Wait and buy one with an SSD from the factory.
In every other case, especially for 4–8 year old machines with an HDD, it is the best investment you can make.
Which capacity to choose

- 240 GB: for very basic use (email, browsing, office work). Good for reviving older laptops.
- 480 GB: the balanced option for most people. Comfortable room for Windows, programs, photos and files.
- 1 TB: if you handle video, professional photography, modern games, or heavy work files.
What it costs in Panama
SSD prices have fallen a great deal in recent years. To give you an idea: the gap between buying a new laptop and putting an SSD in your current one is usually about 10×. In other words, what you would pay for a basic new laptop is ten times what the SSD costs installed in the one you already have.

Almost every laptop and desktop made after 2010 is compatible with a SATA SSD (the most common kind). Those made after 2018 usually accept NVMe as well (faster).
