If your laptop sounds like a hairdryer whenever you do anything moderately demanding, gets so hot it burns your legs, or shuts itself down in the middle of a video call, it is not broken. It probably just needs an internal cleaning and new thermal paste. In Panama’s climate this is one of the services we are asked for most, and the result almost always surprises the client.

Why Panama is an especially hard climate for laptops

Dust, humidity and airborne particles are the silent enemies of your computer. In Panama we have all three in abundance: high humidity all year round, plenty of dust in urban areas, and most laptops work in air-conditioned spaces that constantly cycle air — and dust — through their vents.

The result is predictable: after 2–3 years of normal use, the internal fans are choked with compacted lint. Your laptop tries to cool itself but air cannot get in or out. So what does it do? It deliberately slows down to avoid damaging itself. This is called thermal throttling, and it is the main reason laptops “feel slower over time”.

What thermal paste is and why it dries out

Between your laptop’s processor (CPU) and the heatsink that cools it there is a layer of thermal paste. It is a compound that fills the microscopic imperfections between the two metal surfaces and lets heat pass efficiently from the processor to the heatsink.

Over time — typically 2–3 years — the original paste dries out, crystallizes, and loses its ability to transfer heat. The processor produces the same heat as always, but that heat no longer escapes properly, so the fan runs flat out and the machine still overheats.

Replacing the thermal paste is like giving the processor a skin graft. The processor goes back to its normal temperature, the fans slow down, the machine gets quiet again and stops thermal throttling.

Signs your machine needs this service

Ask yourself whether your laptop shows several of these:

  • It gets very hot in normal use, even just browsing.
  • The fans are very loud, especially when opening programs or on video calls.
  • It shuts itself off during heavy use (games, video, exporting files).
  • It slows down progressively through the day, especially after hours of use.
  • It literally burns if you use it on your lap.
  • It has gone 2+ years without being opened for maintenance.

If you have 2 or more of these symptoms, internal cleaning plus new paste will very likely solve your problem. The difference is noticeable from day one.

What we do in an internal cleaning

The full process, step by step:

  1. Thermal diagnosis first. We measure the processor temperature at idle and under load. That gives us a reference point to compare against afterwards.
  2. Opening the machine. Every laptop is different. Some need the keyboard removed first, others open from underneath. Knowing each model is part of the job.
  3. Vacuuming and blowing out the dust. A deep clean of the dust built up in fans, heatsinks and vents. This is where the lint that was strangling your machine comes out.
  4. Removing the cooling assembly. We take the heatsink off the processor to reach the old thermal paste.
  5. Chemical cleaning of the old paste. With specific products we remove the hardened residue without damaging components.
  6. Applying new thermal paste. We use quality paste (Arctic MX-4 or equivalent) in the right amount. Neither too much nor too little — this matters.
  7. Full reassembly and testing. We put everything back together, power the machine on, and measure the new temperatures. A typical difference is 15–25 °C lower under load.
  8. Handover with a report. We tell you what we found, the temperatures before and after, and recommend when the next service is due.

How often to do it

In Panama, given our climate, this is what we recommend:

  • Heavily used laptops (gaming, editing, demanding work): every 12–18 months.
  • Normal office laptops: every 18–24 months.
  • Lightly used laptops (browsing, email, office work only): every 24–30 months.

If your laptop is 3 years old and has never been opened, it is time. If it is 5 years old and never has been, it is urgent. The amount of dust we pull out of machines like that is remarkable.

When cleaning is not enough

Sometimes the problem is not just dust and paste. Other common causes of overheating that need extra attention:

  • Damaged fans. If a fan bearing is worn, it will be noisy even after cleaning. The fan has to be replaced.
  • Damaged GPU thermal pads. In laptops with a dedicated graphics card there are additional thermal pads that also degrade.
  • A manufacturing flaw. Some models are known for poor thermal design (certain generations of the Dell XPS, the 2018–2019 MacBook Pro). Cleaning helps but does not fully solve it.
  • Prolonged misuse. If the laptop has spent months working on a bed or sofa with the vents covered, the processor may have thermal damage. Cleaning helps but does not reverse the damage.

What a typical client notices afterwards

What clients most often tell us after a full service:

  • It is far quieter. That is the first thing they notice. They went from a hairdryer to a silent laptop.
  • It does not get hot like before. They can use it on their lap again without trouble.
  • It feels faster. Raw speed did not change, but without thermal throttling the processor runs at its real frequency and feels more responsive.
  • The battery lasts longer. With fans that are not running flat out all the time, power draw goes down.

What about desktops?

Desktops need cleaning too, though less often, because they have more room for air to circulate and are easier to maintain yourself. The thermal paste dries out just the same.

For desktops the recommendation is: open it and blow the dust out yourself every 6 months, plus a professional service every 3–4 years with new paste. We can show you on site how to do the basic cleaning if you want to keep on top of it between visits.
