Images above this resolution are reduced proportionally. Smaller ones stay untouched.
How it works
Honest compression, no surprises
We only compress the PDF’s embedded images. Text and fonts stay intact, so the resulting file remains searchable and its text selectable. Most online compressors rasterize the pages to save more, and hand back a PDF where you can no longer search or copy. We don’t do that.
Never larger than the original
If compressing a particular image comes out larger than the original — which happens with already-optimized images — we leave it untouched. The check runs again at the end on the whole file. The PDF you download is always smaller than or equal to the one you added.
When this tool does NOT help
Text-only PDFs don’t shrink because there are no images to compress. JBIG2 or CCITTFax scans need specialized software. Password-protected PDFs need the protection removed first. If what you need is to merge several PDFs into one, use Merge PDF; and to separate one into parts, Split PDF.
Frequently asked questions
Are text and fonts preserved? ▾
Yes. We only touch embedded images: text, fonts, vectors and document structure are preserved exactly. We checked it with pdf.js, the Firefox engine, counting extractable characters before and after: 778 and 778.
What savings can I expect? ▾
It depends on the PDF, and these are measured figures rather than promises: a PDF with many photos drops between 50 and 82%; a mixed one, text with some images, between 40 and 70%; and a mostly-text one, zero, because there are no images to compress.
Why doesn’t my text PDF shrink? ▾
In-browser PDF compression is limited to re-compressing embedded images. A text-only PDF has no images to process, and its weight usually sits in the fonts: shrinking those means rebuilding the font file with only the characters actually used, which needs specialized software.
What’s the maximum PDF size? ▾
We recommend up to 100 MB per file. Larger than that may hang the browser on modest devices. For reference, a 5 MB PDF with photos processes in under a second even on a slow machine.
